520 _aGeneration Distribution and Utilization of Electrical Energy has been written for undergraduate students of Indian and foreign universities. An attempt has been made to provide in a concise form the essential features of generation distribution and utilization aspects of electrical energy. In this new edition, chapter 3 on Distribution Systems and chapter 7 on Electric Traction have been updated. The concept of grid and its associated problems have been explained and modern trends in Electric Traction have been added. The non-conventional methods have been given due weightage, they deserve under the present world energy scenario. The economics of generation starting with the load survey to the fixation of tariffs by the electric utilities has been discussed. Both steady state and transient state characteristics of motors have been discussed. Various modern methods of speed control and braking have been explained. Various methods of ‘Heating and Welding’ have been discussed. A chapter on Illumination Engineering deals into aesthetic and design aspect of illumination in offices, factories etc. Quality and availability of supply, distribution automation, substation grounding, energy auditing have been included in chapter 3 on Distribution. Tables at the end of the chapter give some guidelines for illumination levels in different places of public and private concern. The chapter-7 deals in all aspects of Electric Traction. Electrolytic processes have also been discussed. A large number of problems have been solved to help understand the relevant theory. At the end of each chapter, unsolved problems with their answers have been suggested for further practice. At the end, a large number of objective-type questions have been added to help the reader to test himself. An extensive bibliography at the end of each chapter will help the reader to locate detailed information on various topics of his interest.
